About Andover:

Andover, a historic town in Hampshire, England, holds a significant place in English history. With origins dating back to the 10th century, Andover's name is thought to have Celtic roots, linked to "ash (tree) water."

Located on the River Anton, it dates back to Anglo-Saxon times when it was a royal hunting lodge. Andover was a relatively large settlement at the time of the 1086 Domesday Book and was granted a royal charter in 1175. The wool trade was important to the medieval economy. In more recent centuries, Andover became a coaching stop on the London to Exeter road and later benefited from canal and railway links. During World War II, RAF Andover was an airbase that developed helicopter training. In the post-war period, the town significantly expanded through an overspill agreement with London, gaining new housing and amenities. Major local employers include the Ministry of Defence. Notable associations with Andover include King Ethelred the Unready and bands like The Troggs.
